Idee für eine Unterrichtsstunde in Klasse 10
von Prof.Dr.Hans Finger
Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg.

Plan of the lesson:

STEP 1:
Auf ein leeres Blatt schreiben die Schüler in der Mitte:

Vegetarians do not eat meat or fish.

STEP 2:

1 Vegetarians today
So you want to be a vegetarian, but you're not sure how to start? Thanks to so many people cutting out animal products, going vegetarian has never been easier. There are hundreds of vegetarian foods to fit every taste. You'll find foods you love - and you'll look better, you'll feel better, and you'll know that your diet is cruelty-free. Beginning any new lifestyle can be hard. Don't try to do everything at once. Doctors say it is better if you begin by "vegging up" meals you already eat, like making spaghetti with tomato sauce and not with meat sauce. Try veggie burgers - they taste close enough to the real thing, you may want to try several different brands to find the one you like best. Many canned soups that you know already are vegetarian, like bean soup and vegetable soup. Try vegetarian baked beans and different kinds of pasta. Vegetarian cookbooks show you what you can do yourself. For example, tofu, made from soybeans, picks up the flavors of the food you cook it with. You can use tofu in just about anything. Eating out? Even if nothing on the menu looks vegetarian, just ask - most restaurants will prepare their dishes without meat. Try Chinese or Indian or Mexican restaurants; they usually have more vegetarian food than others. Remember that by going vegetarian, you've chosen a way of living that is good for your health, your money, and your soul. Congratulations!

2 Genetically changed food ("USA Today", March 6, 1997)
There's a war on in Europe, and most Americans have not heard about it. It is about something very basic to human life: our food. Why are we so uninformed when Europeans are angry and their governments stop importing genetically changed foods? A genetically cloned sheep has stolen the headlines. But with each passing day, we eat foods which have been changed genetically, without our knowledge. In Europe, Supermarkets have promised that they will label these foods clearly. Why do people fear these new foods? Foods altered by genetic engineering often contain substances that have never before been part of the human diet: proteins from bacteria and viruses and, in the future, proteins from insects, scorpions and people. There is no way to tell whether those foods are safe to eat. And our government does not test them. Genetically modified foods that have been approved or are under development in the USA: Apples, Rice, Beans, Stawberries, Corn, Cucumbers, Sunflowers, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Melons, Potatoes.

3 Veggies: Fresh or processed
Frozen or canned vegetables are just as good food as fresh vegetables, says a new report. In a study of cooked corn, carrots, broccoli, and green beans, the levels of vitamins were similar. It did not matter if the vegetables were frozen, canned, or refrigerated. "Your mother was right," says Barbara P. Klein at the University of Illinois. "You should eat your vegetables, but you shouldn't worry about what form they come in, because they're all equal from the standpoint of our studies." As many as 25 days pass from when "fresh" vegetables are picked to the time they get to the dinner table, says Klein. On the other hand, frozen and canned vegetables are processed within hours of picking, and vitamins are "locked in", she says.

4 A vegetarian dish
2 cups of rice, 4 cups of water, 5 potatoes (peeled and sliced), 1/2 green cabbage 10-ounce box of frozen peas (or fresh), 2 teaspoons of curry powder, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, salt to taste. Cook rice in 4 cups of water in a covered pot. Put sliced potatoes in a pan with 2 cups of water and heat. Cut the cabbage to pieces and add it to the potatoes. Add peas and spices. Serve over rice. Serves 6.

5 Did You Know All These People Advocated Vegetarianism?
Leonardo Da Vinci, Leo Tolstoy, George Bernard Shaw, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein (Nobel Prize winner), Michael Jackson, Madonna, Paul McCartney... Did you know Benjamin Franklin ate tofu?

6 Vegetarian foods
Maccaroni, spaghetti, cheese pizza, vegetable soup, pancakes, oatmeal, grilled cheese, French fries, fruit shakes, bread, yogurt, peanut butter, jam, fruit salad, corn flakes, tofu...
