The Task of the School and of the Seminar in Regard to the Fight against Socialist and Communist Ideas. Order from May 1st 1889, U. III. 1038 I.
Berlin, Oct. 18th 1890|
His Majesty the King, on May 1st 1889, has given the following order to the ministry of state :
"For some time now the thought has crossed my mind to use the school in its various stages to counteract the diffusion of socialist and communist ideas. The school's main task is by cultivating the fear of God and love of the fatherland to spread a healthy attitude toward the conditions of state and society. But I cannot fail to recognize that in a period, in which the social democratic errors and distortions are spread with increased vigour, the school has to contribute to the recognition of what is really true and what is possible in this world. The school has to strive to implant the conviction in the youth that the teaching of the social democracy is not only incongruous with God's commandments, but also ruinous to both the individual and to the community in its consequences. In its curriculum the school has to give stronger emphasis on new and newest history, and it has to prove that it is the state alone which guarantees the individual's liberty, family and rights; it has to remind the youth that it is Prussia's kings who aim at the improvement of the workers' living conditions, beginning with the reforms of Frederick the Great, the abolition of servitude, and continuing until today. Further it has to prove, based on statistics, inhowfar both the pay and the living standard of the working classes have improved constantly and considerably throughout this century."
