General
Trade : (p.4) In 1908 German foreign trade amounted to a total value of
15,579 [million] Mark, of these 8,738 million Mark imports and 6,840 million
Mark exports. 1907 15,466 million Mark, of these 8,597 imports, 6,869 exports.
In 1904 the German Reich's total foreign trade amounted to 11,577 million Mark.
Merchant Fleet : Steamers over 1000 tons capavity sailing under German
flag on April 1st 1908 (according to "Nautikus" 1907) : 968, sailing
ships 169; on April 1st 1907 : steamers 936, sailing boats 176. In 1907 the
total crew of the German merchant navy was 68,000 men.
Navy : The Imperial Navy had at its disposal on January 1st 1908,
completed or under construction, 22 ships-of-the-line (4 outdated ships mot
included; 6 are under construction), 8 coastal ironclad vessels, 8 battle
cruisers, 27 large cruisers, 11 small cruisers, 9 canon boats, about 20 school
ships not fitted for combat, 11 special ships, 2 port ships and 1 submarine. The
combined crew numbered 46,913 men.
