Note by the digital editor : These Rules and Security Hints were addressed
to German P.O.W.s; the pamphlet forms part of a series of documents which
have been brought back to Germany from the camp at Tertre. The prisoners
obviously have worked in one of the many coal mines in the Borinage, Belgian
province Hainaut. The abbreviation B.O. points to the coal-mining region Borinage near french boarder.
Further information is to be found on the websites CHARBONNAGES DU HAINAUT (history of coal mining in Hainaut), TERTRE, GERMAN WAR-PRISONERS IN BELGIUM

First regulations for P.O.W. workers in the coal mines
1) Execute all orders of the foreman without delay. Follow the commands of
the foreman appointed for you.
2) Wear the protective helmet and the protective shoes.
3) Workers who are about to descend into coal mines prone to mine gas
accidents are forbidden to smoke and evemn to own a pipe, tovacco, cigars,
cigarettes, a lighter, matches or any item suited to light a fire.
4) You are responsible for your lamps. Check that they close tight and take
care of them.
5) Avoid to overload the cage with men and tools. Before you enter or leave
the cage, await the order of the cage warden.
6) Don't deviate from the prescribed path on your way to or from work.
Nobody may climb the closed-off galleries.
Noone may climb the ascending pit without permission of the foreman.
Watch out if you, while working, are near the entrance to an ascending pit.
If you open a door or a gap, close it after passing through.
7) In order to avoid the fall of stones or the caving-in of the ceiling, the
galleries as well as the locations where coal is exploited have to be
supported by wood and iron.
Avoid to work at not yet secured locations. If you are charged with securing
the area by woodwork, do this at an appropriate time and check from time to
time. Such woodwork may only be removed by specially qualified craftsmen.
8) At locations without draught the concentration of inflammable gas is
possible. Therefore ventilation, which does not only serve to freshen up the
air in the mine, but also to remove the potentially damaging gas, may in no
case be obstructed. Do not touch the doors, ropes and pipes installed for
that purpose.
The presence of mine gas is not indicated by an electric lamp, but by an oil
lamp or kerosene lamp. In any case you have to recognise the presence of gas
even when the lamp flickers only slightly. Mine gas burns in the center of
the lamp and extends the flame. If you notice such an extension of the
flame, remove the lamp slowly, move out and warn the foreman.
9) Never switch off the security installations, when you are dealing with
them. Do not touch machines, connections, electric installations, pipes,
cables and signals. When you are charged with guiding or supervising an
installation, observe it for possible dangers. Watch out and follow the
regulations.
10) Workers are forbidden to carry explosives. If you find such, report them
immediately. If you are charged with supervising a charge which is to be
exploded, do not leave your post without order.
11) If you are wounded, even slightly, report the case immediately to your
supervisor. He will give you first aid or make sure that you get it.
If you are witness to an accident, come immediatelly to the aid of the
injured or work to remove the danger; follow the orders of your supervisor
or of experienced workers. In case the supervisor is absent, warn him, if no
other witness did it yet.
12) Any violation will be reported to the military authorities.

Revue, Revue, Revue
this is a word
if it is heard
it only causes joy
Revue, Revue, Revue
everywhere
where it is sung
the people cheer
and no one wants to stay alone
at home one hurries to the celebration
with all of one's dependants,
and all are in good mood when the music
is heard and the curtain falls
the performance begins
Revue, Revue, Revue
where it is heard
one is enchanted
it causes only joy
Revue, Revue, Revue
this magic word
at this location
it is heard today
Revue, Revue
