Capponi, Gino, Marchese, Italian scholar and statesman, born in Florence in 1792 in Florence, in 1848 took the lead of the government of Tuscany, but already in 1849, after the Battle of Novara, withdrew to private life. In 1859 he joined the unification party and in 1860 he became senator. As member of the Accademia della crusca he participated in the lexical work of this academy and devoted himself to the improvement of the text of Dante's Divine Comedy. Among his historical publications must be mentioned "Documenti di storia italiana" (1836-1837). As a blind man, Capponi dictated the history of his hometown, which was published only just before his death in 1876.

Meyer's Konversationslexikon 1885-1892, Article : Capponi
Capponi, Gino, Marchese, Italian scholar, born on September 14th 1792 in Florence, descendant of a famous ancient family, which already played in an important political role in Florence in the 14th century, gained a wide-ranging education by studies and travels, lived almost exclusively for sciences and humanitarian projects, but was so unfortunate to turn blind at a young age. In July 1848 he stepped at the head of the government of Tuscany, but when his moderation and love of peace was regarded with suspicion by the Radicals, withdrew to private life after just 40 days. He approved of the political changes of 1859, although he did not take part in them. Vittorio Emmanuele appointed him honorary president of the Institute of Advanced Studies, and member of the Senate, in which he industrially participated in the work of the commissions, while in the debates he displayed average oratory skills. Depressed by his domestic misfortune, but highly celebrated, he died on February 3rd 1876. In the area of science he published a number of historical studies in "Archivio storico italiano" and edited Colletta's "Storia del reame di Napoli" and the "Documenti di storia italiana" (Florence 1836-1837) and others. He also participated in the lexical work of the Accademia della Crusca and in the improved reedition of Dante's "Divine Comedy". Therefore in 1862 he was placed at the head of the Historic Commission for Tuscany, Umbria and the Marches. Capponi's main work is the "Storia della repubblica di Firenze" (Florence 1875, 2 vols., in German by Dütschke, Leipzig 1877), which in its older part is not strictly critical, but has many advantages of a monumental historical publication. His "Scritti editi ed inediti" were edited byTabarrini (Florence 1877, 2 vols.), his "Lettere" by Carraresi (Florence 1882-1884, 3 vols.). His biography was written by Montazio *Turin 1872), Tabarrini (Florence 1879) and Reumont ("Gino Capponi, 1792-1876, ein Zeit- und Lebensbild", Gotha 1880).
