Montanelli, Giuseppe, Italian politician and author, born in Tuscany in 1813, became professor of law in Pisa in 1840, and soon one of the leaders of the Revolutionary Party in Tuscany, in 1848 he participated in the fight against the Austrians. On October 27th 1848 Grand Duke Leopoldo placed Montanelli and Guerrazzi at the lead of a new cabinet, and after the flight of the Grand Duke, in the face of growing anarchy, Montanelli, Guerrazzi and former minister of justice Mazzoni were selected to function as executive triumvirate (February 1849). After (in March that year) Guerrazzi was given dictatorial power, he sent Montanelli to Paris to win sympathies there for the Tuscan Revolution. After the quick victory of reaction in Tuscany he remained in Paris, but returned to his homeland in 1859 and participated in the national struggle as a volunteer, but holding on to his republican values. In 1862 he was elected into the Italian parlament. He died that year. Montanelli's most noteworthy literary work are "Memorie sull' Italia e specialmente sulla Toscana 1814-50 (1853-55). As a novelist, among others, for Ristori he wrote the tragedy "Camma" (1857) and for the same he translated Legouve's "Medee". (1856).

Montanelli, Giuseppe, Italian author and patriot, born in 1813 in Fucecchio in Tuscany, studied law in Pisa, in addition to his activity as the manager began to write on philosophical issues for journals, tried himself in poetry and in 1836 published a volume of lyric poems. Around 1840 he was called as professor of Italian and international trade law to the University of Pisa, where he published several publications on his special field, among them a philosophical introduction to the study of trade law. But he also felt called to participate in the work of national resurgence. In 1844 he founded the society of the "Fratelli italiani", in 1847 began the edition of the gazette "L'Italia", in the following year he fought at Curtaione, and in 1849, by the chambers of Tuscany, together with Guerrazzi and Mazzini was appointed triumvir. After the takeover of reaction, as an exile he went to Paris, where, in communication with Quinet, Michelet, Louis Blanc, Lamennais and others, he was active in a journalist sense, and where he published a number of works, in which captivating content combine with the advantage of the pure Tuscan language : first the "Memorie sull'Italia e specialmente sulla Toscana dal 1814-1850" (Turin 1853-1855), his main work, further the drame "La sensazione" (Paris 1856) and the captivating tragedy "Camma", written for the Ristori, and performed by her with great success. Montanelli also translated into the Italian the "Medea" by Legouve (1856). Among political papers he published : "Il partito nazionale italiano" (Turin 1856) and "L'impero, il papato, la democrazia in Italia" (Florence 1859). The year 1859 recalled him to arms to join the lines of those fighting for the national cause. Early in 1862 he was elected into the Italian National Assembly, but already on June 17th that year he died in the town where he was born. Posthumously "Dell'ordinamento nazionale" was published (Florence 1862).
