Died in 1574. <BR> Vitus Jonassen Bering, born 1681, a Dane who joined the Russian Navy in 1703. <BR> In 1741 he would lead an expedition to the Pacific coast (Kamchatka), construct <BR> two ships and crossed the Bering Strait, claiming <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#alaska">Alaska</A> for Russia. Died on the <BR> way back to Siberia. <BR> born in Scotland in 1835, arrived in the U.S. in 1848, age 13. Founded Carnegie <BR> Steel co. in 1868; became a business tycoon and, late in his life, a philanthropist. <BR> Carnegie Mellon University is named after him. Died in 1919. <BR> born 1567 or 1570 in France, arrived in North America in 1603, founded <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#quebec">Quebec</A> in <BR> 1608, turned it into the capital of New France. Died in 1635. <BR> born in 1863, founded Ford Motor Company in Detroit in 1903, by introducing the <BR> assembly line technology, he was able to drastically reduce car prices. Business <BR> tycoon, anti-Semite, prior to WW II sympathetic to Nazism; died in 1947. <BR> born in 1743; founded University of Virginia, prime author of Declaration of Inde- <BR> pendence, U.S. President 1801-1809, purchased <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#louisiana">Louisiana</A> from France. <BR> born in 1917; U.S. President from 1961 to his assassination in 1963. Charismatic, <BR> youngest president in U.S. history, in office during the failed Bay of Pigs invasion <BR> (Cuba), the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis. Hesitated <BR> to get the U.S. involved in the Vietnam War; proposed Civil Rights legislation, <BR> launched the Apollo program to land American astronauts on the moon. Eloquent. <BR> born in 1925, brother of John F. Kennedy, appointed Attorney General by his <BR> brother in 1961. In 1968 he declared his candidacy for the presidency. Critical of <BR> U.S. involvement in Vietnam and advocating a social agenda, he was assassi- <BR> nated in 1968. Charismatic and eloquent. <BR> born in 1929, Baptist minister, civil rights activist, proponent of non-violent <BR> resistance, he was the leading figure of the U.S. civil rights movement in the <BR> 1960es. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, assassinated in 1968. <BR> born in 1809, self-educated man who became a lawyer, elected president in 1861 <BR> when the southern slave-holding states seceded, in office during the Civil War, <BR> insisted on the restoration of the union. Issued Emancipation Proclamation in <BR> 1863. Assassinated in 1865. <BR> born in 1908, U.S. Senator (Wisconsin) since 1947, he became the leading figure <BR> in an anti-communist hysteria which was named after him, <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#mccarthyism">McCarthyism</A> (1950- <BR> 1954). McCarthy accused numerous persons of being communists, often without <BR> evicence. In 1954 he was proven to be a fraud; McCarthyism ebbed down. <BR> McCarthy remained senator until his death in 1957. <BR> born in 1580 in the Duchy of Kleve, appointed governor of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#newnetherland">New Netherland</A> in 1625, <BR> purchased Manhattan from Amerindians in 1626, founded <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#newyork">Nieue Amsterdam</A> <BR> (present New York). Was of assistance to the Swedes in the establishment of <BR> the colony of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#newsweden">New Sweden</A> in 1638; died in 1638. <BR> born in 1644 in England, joined the Quakers in 1669, obtained a charter for the <BR> colony of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#pennsylvania">Pennsylvania</A> in 1681, founded the city of Philadelphia, promoted <BR> immigration, called German and Swiss Anabaptists into the country; died in <BR> 1718. <BR> born in 1839, founded Standard Oil in 1870, acquired competing companies, <BR> turned Standard Oil into a monopolist; in 1911 a court ordered Standard Oil to <BR> be broken up. John D. Rockefeller died in 1937. <BR> born in 1882, disabled, U.S. president 1933-1945 (the only one to be elected 4 <BR> times); in the 1930es during the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#greatdepression">Great Depression</A>, his <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#newdeal">New Deal</A> program <BR> spread optimism. Lead the U.S. into World War II; died shortly before the <BR> war ended. Married to Eleanor Roosevelt. <BR> born in 1858, career politician, participated in the Spanish-American War 1898, <BR> U.S. President 1901-1909; during his rule the construction of the Panama <BR> Canal was begun. Pursued an anti-trust policy. Died in 1919. <BR> Tatanka Iyotake, born c. 1831, chief of the Hunkpapa Sioux, annihilated 7th <BR> cavalry (under George A. Custer) in Battle of Little Big Horn 1876; then led <BR> his Sioux across the border into Canada. Retrurned to U.S. in 1881; lived on <BR> reservation; was killed in 1890. <BR> born c.1610, served as director of the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#wic">W.I.C.</A> in Cura&ccedil;ao 1642-1646, <BR> before being appointed governor of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#newtork">Nieue Amsterdam</A> (in 1647, present New <BR> York). Took New Sweden in 1655; surrendered <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdnamerica.html#newnetherland">New Netherland</A> to the British <BR> in 1664.
