Figure of legendary rather than historical significance.
legendary Greek poet who is credited with having written both the Iliad and the
Odyssey. Written down in the 8th century B.C., the Iliad and Odyssey contain oral
tradition (oral literature) which reaches back several centuries; some scholars assume,
that they were written down by several persons, who in collective memory are referred
to as Homer.
legendary king of Crete, father of the Minotaur, a beast half human, half bull, who was
so ferocious that he was locked up in a maze. He was killed by
Trojan hero Hector. Figure of legendary rather than historical significance.
legendary King of Troy, father of Hector, Paris, Cassandra. Heinrich Schliemann, when
finding a number of gold objects while excavating Troy, called them "Priamos'
Treasure"; they are much older than the time when the Greeks conquered Troy.
Priamos is a figure of legendary rather than historical significance.
born in 1822 in Mecklenburg; as a high school student he memorized both the Iliad and
Odyssey - in their Greek original. Mastered 18 languages. After having made a fortune
in the Russia trade, he retired from his business, decided to devote his life to his
passion; studied archaeology for 3 months (in Paris), then went to Istanbul and
obtained permission to excavate Troy (the existence of which at that time was largely
doubted). Began to excavate Troy in 1871. Was rather an amateur archaeologist; in
1882 he hired Wilhelm Dörpfeld, who developed the techniques of archaeology
during the process of excavating Troy. Schliemann also excavated Mycenae, Tiryns,
Orchomenos.
