Still under house arrest. <BR> last Emperor of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#vietnam">Vietnam</A>; born in 1913, succeeded to the throne in 1925 (Vietnam a <BR> French protectorate); Bao Dai being a French puppet, from May to August 1945 a <BR> Japanese puppet. Bao Dai abdicated in August 1945, handing power over to the Viet <BR> Minh. At first part of the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#vietminh">Viet Minh</A> govt., he left Vietnam and returned, at the request of <BR> and protected by the French, resumed the function of Emperor. Following the French <BR> withdrawal, Bao Dai became Emperor of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#svietnam">South Vietnam</A> (1954; he lived in France), but <BR> was removed by a 1955 referendum. Died in 1997. <BR> born in 1948 in <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#easttimor">Portuguese Timor</A>; ordained a priest in 1980, since 1983 administrator of <BR> the Diocese of Dili (= East Timor, since 1975 under <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#indonesia">Indonesian</A> occupation), in 1988 <BR> ordained bishop. An outspoken critic of the Indonesian administration, he demanded a <BR> referendum to be held on the status of East Timor. Awarded the 1996 Nobel Peace <BR> Prize. Resigned from his office in 2002. <BR> British adventurer, born in 1803; purchased a ship, suppressed an uprising against the <BR> Sultan of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#brunei">Brunei</A> in Sarawak 1838-1841, in 1842 was appointed Rajah of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#sarawak">Sarawak</A>; died <BR> in 1868, was succeeded by his nephew Charles Johnson Brooke. <BR> <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#voc">V.O.C.</A> Governor 1619-1623, 1627-1629, founded <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#batavia">Batavia</A> in 1619, ordered the Banda <BR> Massacre of 1621 (in retaliation for the previous murder of Dutchmen visiting the island). <BR> Established the V.O.C. Empire in Asia. Born in 1587, died in 1629. <BR> born in 1901; in 1954 appointed prime minister of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#svietnam">South Vietnam</A>, by Emperor Bao Dai <BR> had Empire abolished in a 1955 referendum. Was a christian; ruled in authoritarian <BR> style, pursued a policy of suppression against Buddhism. During his rule the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#vietcong">Viet <BR> Cong</A> insurrection began; killed in a military coup d'etat 1963. <BR> 1902-1980, <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#indonesia">Indonesian</A> independence activist. <BR> born in 1890 as Nguyen Tat Thanh, lived in England/France 1915-1923, became a <BR> communist (was more of a Vietnamese patriot); leader of the Vietnamese <BR> independence movement since 1941 (= the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#vietminh">Viet Minh</A>); since 1954 President of <BR> <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#nvietnam">N. Vietnam</A>. Strove for the reunification of Vietnam. Died in 1969. <BR> born in 1949, leader of the East Timorese resistance against Indonesian rule 1975 <BR> to 1999, awarded the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize. First Dutch navigator to reach the East Indies. <BR> born as Phan Dinh Khai in 1911; joined the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#vietminh">Viet Minh</A> in 1945. Chief <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#nvietnam">N. Vietnamese</A> <BR> negotiator in 1973 when the US withdrew from Vietnam. Was awarded the Nobel <BR> Peace Prize of 1973, did not accept it. Died in 1990. <BR> born in 1923, <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#singapore">Singapore</A> politician and statesman, PM 1959-1990, credited for <BR> Singapore's economic development, criticized for authoritarian style of govt. <BR> also spelled Legaspi, Spanish Conquistador, born in 1524. Took command of the <BR> 1564-1565 expedition from Mexico to the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#philippines">Philippines</A>. He began the comnquest <BR> on Cebu; in 1571, Manila was occupied; L. died in 1572. <BR> born in 1925, PM of <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#malaysia">Malaysia</A> 1981-2003, credited for Malaysian economic <BR> development, reknown for outspoken views. <BR> born in 1917, president-dictator of the <A HREF = "../../histdic/wh/hdseasia.html#philippines">Philippines</A> 1965-1986, resigned and left <BR> the country during massive street protests (People's Power).
