 Political History . The Lordship of Lippe was established in 1123. After the acquisition of the Counties of Schwalenberg and Sternberg, in 1528 the Lordship of Lippe was elevated to County of Lippe. Since 1500, Lippe was part of the Westphalian Circle within the Holy Roman Empire. In 1613 it was partitioned into three lines : Lippe-Brake, Lippe-Detmold and Lippe-Alverdissen. The city of Lippstadt (founded in 1184/1185 by a Lord of Lippe) from 1666 to 1850 was a condominium, with the Count of Lippe and the Elector of Brandenburg (since 1701 King in Prussia, since 1772 King of Prussia) as joint owners. The Lippe-Brake line ended in 1709 and her territory fell to Lippe-Detmold; the state came to be called County of Lippe, capital Detmold. Lippe-Alverdissen was absorbed into the County of Lippe-Schauenburg (Schaumburg-Lippe). In 1789, the Counts of Lippe were elevated to the rank of princes, the territory thus elevated to the status of principality.
During the Napoleonic years, Lippe maintained her separate status and was member of the Confederation of the Rhine.
In 1812, Amt Alverdissen was purchased from Schaumburg-Lippe.
In 1867 Lippe joined the North German Confederation, in 1871 Unified Germany. In 1918 the monarchy was abolished; Lippe became a free state. In 1945 it came under British Occupation. In 1947 it merged with the formerly Prussian Province Westfalen to form Westfalen-Lippe (Regierungsbezirk Detmold, which included the former Regierungsbezirk Minden) which again forms part of Land Nordrhein-Westfalen, which again since 1949 forms part of the FRG.

Religion . Prior to the Reformation, part of Lippe belonged to the Diocese of Minden, part to the Diocese of Paderborn. In 1538 a Lutheran Church Ordinnance was introduced. In 1605 Count Simon VI. converted to Calvinism and appointed Calvinist ministers; Calvinism was official creed until 1854. In consequence, the population was partly Lutheran, partly Calvinist. In 1854, religious toleration was granted to Catholics.

Administrative History . In 1535 the County was divided in districts (Ämter, singular Amt). By 1789 (except for exclaves) there were Amt Barntrup (1731-1777 held by Hannover as a pawn), Brake, Detmold, Hohenhausen, Horm, Lage (1613-1748 to L.-Alverdissen), Lipperode, Oerlinghausen, Schieder (1709-1780 to Schaumburg-Lippe), Schötmar, Schwalenberg (until 1808 jointly owned with Paderborn), Varenholz. In 1812, Amt Alverdissen was purchased from Schaumburg-Lippe. In 1838 Amt Blomberg (hitherto Schaumburg-Lippe) was placed under Lippe.
In 1879 the districts were dissolved, replaced by Administrative districts : Blomberg, Brake, Delmold, Lipperode-Cappel, Schötmar. In 1932 the administrative districts were replaced by Kreise (Circles) Detmold and Lemgo; in 1969 both were merged to form Kreis Lippe. In 1969 Amt Lügde, historically part of the Princebishopric of Paderborn, and since 1815 of Prussia (Province Westfalen) was incorporated into Kreis Lippe.
