Asir 1915-1934

Administration . From 1517 to 1915, Asir, at least nominally was a province of the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman rule was restored in 1872. In 1915 Ali al-Idris began a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. The Arab Revolt begun by Sharif Husain ibn Ali of Mecca / the Hejaz in June 1916 in effect separated the Ottoman forces in Medina from Asir. Ali al Idris controlled only part of Asir; from 1919 to 1934 Ibn Saud, Emir (since 1921 Sultan) of Nejd, annexed Asir piece by piece; remaining parts of Asir were absorbed by Yemen.

Social History . The population estimate for Asir in 1925 is 1 million. (NIYB 1925 p.46).
