Successor : Israel, since 1948 The Balfour Declaration of 1917 coined the term "Jewish Homeland in Palestine" but failed to define it. When Britain received a mandate over Palestine, the latter consisted of both Palestine proper and Transjordan. Transjordan was separated in 1922. In the 1920es the British permitted unrestricted Jewish immigration, and the cordon of Jewish settlements along the coast of the Mediterranean, over the years, became dense, while the hill country, the Jordan valley and the Negev saw much fewer, mostly isolated Jewish settlements.
