Cyprus 1878-1914

During the Berlin Conference of 1878, Britain leased Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire (formally on the context of tax farming, then practiced in the Ottoman Empire). The annual tribute of 92,799 Pounds 11 Shilling 3 Pence , as well as the costs of the British administration, had to be paid for by the Cypriot population. The Cypriot Pound was introduced in 1879. The Bank of Cyprus was established in 1899.
Britain established military bases, improved on the island's road system, established a resort in the Troodos Mountains. The Cyprus Museum was opened in 1883, the railway line Famagusta-Nicosia opened in 1905.
