1967-1974 since 1989

Greece 1974-1989

Administration . In 1974 the military junta returned power to civilians. A general election was held; Konstantin Karamanlis, head of New Democracy, assumed the post of PM, which he held from 1974 to 1980, followed by Giorgios Rallis (ND, 1980-1981) and Andreas Papandreou (PASOK, 1981-1989). General elections were held in 1974, 1977, 1981, 1985 and 1989 (twice).

Foreign Policy . Greece applied for EC membership (admitted in 1981).
Greece found itself in an difficult situation regarding Turkey, a NATO ally. In addition to the Cyprus problem, a dispute now arose over the Aegaean shelf; Turkey claimed part of it, a claim Greece vehemently disputed.
With Communism in crisis in the late 1980es, Greece experienced an influx of refugees from neighbouring Albania and Yugoslavia.

Political History . In 1974 Greece began a new phase of democracy. The multitude of pre-1967 Greece was effectively replaced by a two-party system, consisting of the conservative New Democracy and the social democrat PASOK. The ban on the Communist party was lifted in 1974. From 1974 to 1989, Greece saw only three PMs; the country politically has become far more stable compared to earlier decades.

The Economy . The influence of the Oil Crisis on Greece was of ambiguous nature, as many tankers shipping the black gold sailed under Greek flag; Greece hs one of the world's largest merchant shipping fleets.
The Greek tourism industry, after the restoration of democracy in 1974, flourished again.
Since joining the EC in 1981, Greece was to profit by receiving funds for the development of underdeveloped regions and agricultural subsidies. Greece's European policy was at times obstinate, intending to maximize financial aid for the country.

Social History . According to censi, the population of Greece was 8.76 million in 1971, 9.74 million in 1981 and 10.26 million in 1991. A population decrease on many of the Aegean islands can be observed, as the local economy provides few jobs and young persons move onto the mainland in search for work.

Cultural History . Greek athletes participated in the Summer Olympics of Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988.
