History of Kosovo, 1945-1974

In 1945, Kosovo was established as a Socialist Autonomous Region within the Socialist Republic of Serbia. The area was constituted by combining southern and central Kosovo (in 1941 annexed into Albania by Italy) with northern Kosovo, during the war part of German-occupied Serbia and marginal stretches of territory which during the war was occupied by Bulgarian forces.
Pristina was selected as capital (1946). The ethnic Serbs expelled from Kosovo during the war were not permitted to return.
The communist economy was introduced in Kosovo, land, herds and factories nationalized. In 1963 Kosovo was upgraded from Autonomous Region to Autonomous Province. In 1970, the Pristina department of the University of Belgrade was upgraded to the University of Pristina, which was to become the center of Albanian culture in Yugoslavia.
