Moldova 1924-1941

The larger part of present Moldova, the territory to the west of the Dnjestr, during this period formed part of Romania. On the east of the Dnjestr, in 1924 the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established, a tiny republic within the Ukrainian SSR.
In June 1940 France surrendered to Germany. Romania, now without her protector, was forced to cede Bessarabia to the USSR; the Moldavian ASSR annexed most of Bessarabia. In June 1941 the Moldavian ASSR was overrun by German and Romanian forces, and annexed into Romania.
