In Antiquity Greece was a cultural entity, divided in a number of competing political entities. Then part of the Roman Empire, Christianity being introduced in the 1st century AD and made sole state religion in 395 AD. The Roman Empire split in two in 395 AD; the (Eastern) Roman Empire, by Historians referred to as the Byzantine Empire (capital : Constantinople, language of administration : Greek, official religion : Greek Orthodox), lasted until 1453 AD. Immigration of Slavs and Vlachs from the 6th century onward. In 1204-1261 interlude of the Latin Empire (a crusader state; Catholic Church attempted to coerce the Orthodox population to convert to Catholicism). Byzantine Empire restored, but crusader states in mainland Greece, islands held by Venetians, Genoese, Knights of St. John. In the 14th and 15th century the Ottoman Empire conquered most of these polities; the Byzantine capital Constantinople fell in 1453.
The Greek Orthodox community formed a millet in the Ottoman Empire.
Following the Greek Rebellion 1821, an independent Kingdom of Greece was established in 1829/1832. In 1864 Greece annexed the Ionian Islands, in 1881 Thessaly, in 1912/1913 Crete, Samos, Chios, Lesbos and other Aegean islands as well as parts of the Ottoman pashaliks of Janina and Salonica. In 1919 Western Thrace was annexed. The attempt to gain Eastern Thrace and the region around Smyrna was foiled in the Graeco-Turkish War 1920-1923; also Greece had to give up its claim on Northern Epirus (to Albania). In 1947 the Dodecanese Islands weree annexed.
