Ireland since 1990



In 1990 the Irish voters elected the country's first woman president, Mary Robinson. In 1992, abortion legislation was reformed; it is still one of the strictest in Europe. In 1997, divorce, under certain circumstances, was legalized.
In 1991, Ireland signed the Maastricht Treaty. In 2002/2004, Ireland introduced the Euro currency. In 2005 the EU accepted Irish Gaelic as one of the official languages of the EU.
