Since 1603, England and Scotland were connected in a Dynastic Union under the (Scottish) Stuart Dynasty, but resided in London.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain was created by the Act of Union, passed by the parliaments of Scotland and England in 1707, in 1800 it was extended to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, in 1922 reduced to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; the latter usually referred to as the United Kingdom or the UK. Wales was ruled as an annex to England since the early 15th century. A number of islands technically were not part of the United Kingdom, but rather separate territories in Dynastic Union with the UK - the Isle of Man until 1402, and the Channel Islands - the remnant of the Duchy of Normandy the English kings had held on to in the 16th century.
