British Windward Islands, 1880-1958

In 1880, GRENADA, ST. VINCENT, ST. LUCIA and TOBAGO were combined to form the British colony of the WINDWARD ISLANDS; the seat of administration was CASTRIES on St. Lucia. In 1886, Tobago became insolvent and, seceding from the Windward Islands, amalgamated with Trinidad. In 1939, DOMINICA left the British Leeward Islands and joined the Windward Islands.
The Windward Islands was a fedetation of colonies; the individual island colonies preserved a large degree of autonomy and identity. In 1958, the individual island colonies joined the FEDERATION OF THE WEST INDIES. Now superfluous, the Federation of the Windward Islands dissolved.
