Cuba Turks & Caicos Islands
First posted on June 22nd 2002, last revised on November 16th 2010

Settled by Arawaks between the 6th and 9th century. Discovered by Columbus in 1492, first permanent European (English) settlement established in 1647, England failed to take measures to protect the island group, which for a long time was controlled by pirates. In 1782 the islands came uinder Spanish occupation, but soon were returned to British rule (1783), and from 1783 to independence in 1973 (autonomy in 1964) the Bahamas enjoyed a period of political stability.
