Conquered by Spain in 1511. The Captaincy General of Cuba was created in 1607 as part of the
Viceroyalty of New Spain.
It covered the island of Cuba and on the mainland Florida. When Jamaica was lost to England
in 1655, many of the Spanish settlers from Jamaica moved to Cuba.
Florida was ceded to Britain in 1763, and regained in 1783. Louisiana was added to the Captaincy General in 1763 and formally returned
to France in 1800, although Spain /
the Captaincy General of Cuba continued to administer it until 1803/1804 and maintained her claim on the territory until 1819, when Florida was lost to the United States. When Mexico gained independence in 1821, the Captaincies General of Cuba and Puerto Rico now were directly placed under the Spanish colonial administration. The economic development of the island only began after the British occupation of Havana in 1762 and the immigration of sugar plantation owners fleeing revolution in Haiti 1791. While Spain's colonial possessions in continental America were independent by 1826, Spain held on to Cuba and suppressed several rebellions. Following the Spanish-American War 1898 Cuba declared independence in 1902.
