First posted on November 12th 2010

From 1815 to 1828 and from 1845 to 1936 the later Netherlands Antilles (Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, Saba, St. Eustatius and the Dutch half of Sint Maarten) were known as Curaçao en onderhorigheden (C. and dependencies), from 1936 to 1948 as the Gebied van Curaçao (Territory of C.).
This page refers to the island of Curaçao; for the larger territorial units by that name, see under Netherlands' Antilles.
In 1634 the W.I.C. took possession of Curaçao. The first W.I.C. went bankrupt in 1674 to be replaced by the G.W.I.C. (second W.I.C.) which was dissolved in 1792, and her assets fell to the Dutch Republic. From 1815 to 1828 part of Curaçao and Dependencies, from 1828 to 1845 of the Dutch West Indies, from 1845 to 1936 of Curaçao and Dependencies, from 1936 to 1948 of the Territory of Curaçao, from 1948 to 2010 part of the Netherlands Antilles. Since 2010 autonomous.
