Martinique Netherlands' Antilles

First settled in c.300 B.C. by Arawaks, who later were replaced by Caribs. France took possession of Guadeloupe in 1635 and introduced a sugar plantation economy based on slave labor. During wars with England / the United Kingdom occasionally under British occupation, Guadeloupe is still integral part of the Republic of France. as are Guadeloupe's historic dependencies, Saint Martin (northern half, French since 1627) and Saint Barthelemy (leased to Sweden 1784-1878).
In 1963 Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy were annexed into the Departement of Guadeloupe; in 2007 they were split off and established as separate Overseas Collectivities of Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy respectively.
