First posted on June 20th 2002, last revised on November 11th 2010

Settled by Arawaks c.130 AD; they later were replaced by Caribs. France took possession of Martinique in 1635 and introduced a sugar plantation economy based on slave labor. During wars with England / the United Kingdom occasionally under British occupation, Guadeloupe is still integral part of the Republic of France.
