History of Angola, 1918-1939



Portugal had become a republic in 1910 and since 1926 de facto was a rightist dictatorship, the strongman of which was ANTONIO DE OLIVEIRA SALAZAR.
Following the model of fascist Italy, the Portuguese state engaged in state-run development projects, such as the BENGUELA RAILWAY, to overcome the economic crisis. The state encouraged immigration into the colonies, where it favoured the settlers at the expense of the native population.
Diamonds were discovered; exploitation began in 1920;, diamonds were to form a major source of income for the colony.
