1843-1889 History of Central Africa Gabon
1910-1918

Gabon, 1889-1910

In 1889, the Gabon Protectorate was integrated into the Protectorate of French Congo with it's capital at Brazzaville. Gabon's Libreville developed into the French Congo's main port. The landlocked French protectorate of Oubangi-Chari-Chad depended also on imports through the port of Libreville.
The main commercial products of the Gabon were rubber and ivory, rubber 'collected' from the indigenous inhabitants in form of a rubber tax.
In 1904, Gabon was separated from the French Congo and declared a protectorate of it's own, the reason being that Gabon was not, French Congo proper was included in the CONGO FREE TRADE AREA established by the CONGO ACT of 1885. Scandals regarding the maltreatment of the indigenous population in the Belgian Congo (enforced rubber tax) had caused international concern, which also affected the French Congo.
In 1910, French Congo, Gabon, Chad and Oubangi-Chari were joined to form FRENCH EQUATORIAL AFRICA, capital Brazzaville.
