History of Central Africa 1781-1885

What was to become Spanish Guinea, from it's discovery in 1472 until 1781

In 1472 FERNANDO DO PO discovered and claimed the islands of Bioko (also known as Fernando Poo), Annobon, Sao Tome and Principe and claimed them for Portugal. The Portuguese did not settle.
In 1778, Portugal ceded it's claim to Fernando Poo and Annobon to Spain. The Spanish hoped now to be able to supply their Caribbean colonies with African slaves.
Spanish settlers arrived, but the colony suffered from Yellow Fever; the colony was given up in 1781.
