History since colonialism :
Chad . Cameroon Sultanate located to the southeast of Lake Chad, founded in the 16th century. For periods of time it was subject to Bornu. Islam became state religion around 1600. Visited by British explorer Dixon Denham in 1823, German explorers Heinrich Barth in the 1850es and Gustav Nachtigal in the early 1870es. The capital was Massenya. 1893, threatened by Wadai, the Sultanate asked for French protection; his capital Massenya was sacked by troops of Rabeh az Zubair in 1894. Germany and France partitioned the Sultanate in the treaty of 1894. The wedge formed by German (Kamerunese) Bagirmi territory was ceded by Germany to France in 1911. Historical Atlas : Chad Page |
