Panama 1945-1970

Panama went through a period of political instability, with President ARNULFO ARIAS being ousted in 1952, President JOSE ANTONIO REMON being assassinated in 1955.
U.S. presence in the Canal Zone and U.S. treatment of Panamanian employees remained sensitive political issues, the display of a U.S. flag by U.S. high school students in the Canal Zone caused riots of Panamanian nationalists in 1964.
Many shipping companies began to register their vessels in Panama, in order to avoid the labour and wage regulations of the advanced nations. As a consequence, Panama's merchant fleet - on paper - grew to become one of the world's largest.
