Kyrgyzstan since 1991



ASKAR AKAYEV was elected president; Kyrghyzstan obtained independence when the USSR disintegrated late in 1991. The country was renamed from Kirghisia into KYRGYZSTAN, the capital from Frunze into BISHKEK. Kyrgyzstan joined the CIS (1991), the UN (1992) and the CSCE (1992). A CONSTITUTION was adopted in 1993, elections held in 1995, which extended the presidency of A. Akayev. A new bill permitted private ownership of land (1997). The country experienced armed attacks in the south in 1999-2000; in 2001 2 persons were executed for participating in these raids which were blamed on Islamic militants.
The National Olympic Committee of the Repubic of Kyrgyzstan was established in 1991 and recognized by the IOC in 1993.
