Hong Kong 1918-1929


Administration . Francis Henry May served as governor from 1912 to 1919, Reginald Stubbs from 1919 to 1925, Cecil Clementi from 1925 to 1930. The colony of Hong Kong and the (leased) New Territories were under a common administration.

The Economy . Hong Kong had grown to prominence as a regional trade hub. The situation in China, in a state of civil war since 1926, resulted in a greater dependence on the import of arms and ammunitions.
Hong Kong experienced labour unrest at an unprecedented level : a strike by mechanics in 1920 which resulted in a wage increase; a strike by sailors in 1921, a general strike in 1926.

Social History . The census of 1921 counted 625,200 Hong Kong residents, the census of 1931 counted 849,800. Hong Kong remained, to some extent, a segregated society, with the Chinese population barred from certain residential areas (Victoria Peak) and recreational facilities.

Modernization . Kai Tak Airport was opened in 1924.
