Western Chou, 11th century - 771 B.C.

In the 11th century - dates given range between 1122 and 1030 B.C., the SHANG DYNASTY was overthrown by one of it's vassals, the CHOU or Zhou, which established their rule.
The period until 771 is referred WESTERN CHOU. Until 771 the capital was at HAO, later at CHANG'AN. During the Chou period, Chinese literature flourished; Chou expanded the territory beyond the Shang borders.
The organization of the Chou state has been compared with that of feudal Europe, as it was based on a ruler-vassal relationship; however this relationship was often based on family ties.
