History of the Territory of the Modern Province of Hainan The territory of Hainan did not belong to the Xia Dynasty (1989-1558), Shang Dynasty (1556-1046 BC), the Zhou Dynasty (1046-221 BC) and the Qin in 225-206. The Western Han (221 BC - 8 AD), expanded, annexing mainland Guangdong, but not Hainan. Xin 8-22 AD and Eastern Han 25-220, Wu (Sun Wu, 222-280) were neighbours of a yet unconquered Hainan. Then Hainan was subject to Western Jin 265-317, Eastern Jin, From c.420 to 581, Fujian was under the Southern Dynasties until Sui (581-618) again reunited China. Sui was followed by Tang (618-907). During the Five Dynasties and 10 States Period, Hainan was under Southern Han (917-971). Fujian was reunited under Northern Song (960-1127). and Southern Song (1127-1279), followed by Yuan (1234-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911). the Republic of China (1911-1949). Since 1949 Hainan forms part of the People's Republic of China. History of Hainan as a Chinese Province Under the Sui Dynasty, the territory of Hainan was under the Yang province. Under Tang, Hainan formed part of Lingnan province. Under Northern Song, Hainan was part of Guangnanxi province. Under Southern Song, Guangnanxi province (with Hainan) was maintained. Under Yuan, Hainan formed part of Huguang province. Guangdong Province was established and named early during the Ming Dynasty, and maintained by the Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China and People's Republic of China.
