French Colony, 1840-1914

The Comoros - Grande Comoro (Nzazidja), Anjouan (Nzwani), Moheli (Mwani) and Mayotte - have seen Malay, African and Arab immigration. In the 15th century, a group of Persians arrived, the SHIRAZI, who established a number of Sultanates. The population of the Comoros is Muslim; the island economy was based on trade, slaves being a major commodity.
The islands were visited by the Portuguese and the Dutch, both of whom did not attempt to establish footholds there.
