NARRATIVE
For the country's earlier history, see History of the Swahili Coast
1500-1886 . 1886-1918 . 1918-1963 . since 1963

1500s to 1886
In precolonial European texts written in the 16th to 19th century, the coast of modern-day Kenya is regarded part of Zanguebar, a contemporary term for the Swahili coast. The most important trade centers on the Kenyan stretch of the Swahili Coast were Mombasa and Lamu. From the early 16th to the end of the 17th century, Portugal held key positions on the Northern Swahili Coast (Mombasa, Kilwa, Zanzibar). In 1698 they were ousted by forces of the Sultanate of Oman. In 1840 the Sultanate of Zanzibar became independent from Oman; nominally it controlled the Northern Swahili Coast, but soon Mombasa under the Mazrui Dynasty was independent.

1886-1918
In the course of the Scramble for Africa, the European powers ignored the claim of the Sultanate of Zanzibar on the Northern Swahili Coast. Britain claimed British East Africa (Kenya) with Mombasa, its borders being established by treaties with Germany (German East Africa) and Italy (Italian Somaliland).
From 1886 to 1895, the nascent colony and protectorate was administrated by the Imperial British East Africa Company.
Among its problems : there was no navigable river connecting the coast with the interior; the establishment of such a connection was, however, of vital importance to Britain's claim on Uganda. The IBEAC did not have the funds to construct the necessary railroad. So British East Africa was transferred to the Colonial Office in 1895, and Frederick Lugard appointed governor. He oversaw the construction of the railroad (the "Lunatic Express"). Nairobi was to grow out of a temporary camp for workers on this railroad.

1918-1963
In 1917 Kenya and Uganda formed a customs union. In 1921 the East African Shilling was introduced as a common currency, also used in Tanganyika and other British colonies in the region. In 1927 Tanganyika (until 1916/1919 German East Africa) joined the Kenya-Uganda customs union. The immigration of Asians intensified.
In 1925 Britain ceased part of Kenya, the Jubaland, to Italy (Italian Somaliland) in order to appease Mussolini.
In 1952 the Mau-Mau Rebellion began, a guerilla campaign targeting isolated farms and police stations. Although it lasted on until 1960, militarily it was defeated by the British authorities. But the stage was set for independence; the British administration and the white settlers no longer viewed Kenya as the idyllic scenery portrayed in novels/movies such as "Out of Africa". In 1963, Kenya was released into independence. Mau-Mau leader Jomo Kenyatta was released from jail and assumed the presidency.

Since 1963
Kenya did not pursue a policy of socialist experiments, and long was regarded one of the more successful countries in Africa. Transition of power from Jomo Kenyatta (1963-1978) to Daniel Arap Moi (1978-2002) had been smooth. In 1997 Kenya experienced ethnic violence in the context of a contested presidential election.
Kenya was/is affected by the political instability its neighbours Uganda (1971-1986), Ethiopia (1975-1991) and Somalia (since 1991) went/go through.
