The Magyars (in English referred to as Hungarians) arrived in the Pannonian Basin in 895 and established a state there. In 1002 conversion to Christianity and establishment of the Kingdom of Hungary. In the 11th century Hungary and Croatia were united in Dynastic Union; de facto Croatia becama a Hungarian sideland.
The Battle of Mohacs 1526 proved disastrous for Hungary, as it resulted in the partition of the country in three parts : Royal (Habsburg) Hungary, Ottoman Hungary and Transylvania.
In the aftermath of the failed second Ottoman siege of Vienna 1683, the Habsburg Dynasty extended her rule over all of Hungary with Transylvania (1699; the Banat added in 1718).
From 1526 to 1783, Pressburg (in Hungarian Poczsony; the modern Bratislava) was capital of (Royal) Hungary. The Habsburg administration in the 18th century pursued a policy of resettlement, calling settlers on non-Hungarian ethnicity into the country.
Emperor Joseph II. ordered Latin as language of administration, education and jurisdiction to be replaced by German. This event was to trigger the rise of Hungarian nationalism; Hungarians were opposed to German being the new official language. In 1806 the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved, the Emperor now being Emperor of Austria, the territory of which contained the historical Kingdom of Hungary. Hungary's parliament became the site of heated debates about political reforms. During the Hungarian Revolution 1848-1849 the radical patriots were in charge, who demanded independence and intended to assimilate the national minorities within the Kingdom of Hungary into the Hungarian nation. National minorities such as the Croats and Slovaks sided with the Austrian monarchy; with Russian aid the revolution was suppressed.
Following the Austrian defeat at the hands of Prussia in 1866, the Austrian government signed the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich (or Compromise), which granted Hungary's parliament far-reaching autonomy. Hungary's parliament was dominated by Hungary's ethnic Hungarian nobility. The national minorities were underrepresented; the Hungarian government pursued the policy of Magyarization, an attempt to forcefully assimilate the national minorities, which succeeded only in alienating the latter. Following defeat in World War II, the Treaty of Trianon (1920) truncated Hungary, as post-Trianon Hungary made up only 40 % of the area and population of the historic Kingdom of Hungary, while large areas of the aforementioned kingdom were allocated to Czechoslovakia, Romania and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and the Burgenland to the Republic of Austria.
