Prussia 1772-1947
Royal Prussia 1466-1772
In 1824 the provinces of East Prussia and West Prussia were placed under one common president; in 1829 both provinces were merged to form the Province of Prussia. In 1878 it was split again, the Provinces of East and West Prussia reestablished. In 1919 Polish forces took control of the larger part of the Province of West Prussia; Poland proceeded to annex the occupied area. The city of Danzig was given the status of a free city; the Plebiscite Area Marienwerder opted for remaining with Germany and was integrated into the Province East Prussia; other remnants of the former Province of West Prussia in 1922 combined with remnants of the Province of Posen to form the Province Posen-West Prussia; it was dissolved in 1938. In 1945 the entire area of the former province of West Prussia came under Polish administration; those inhabitants declaring themselves as German nationals were expelled.
