France 1815-1830 : the Economy

Until 1818, occupation troops remained stationed in France. According to the peace treaties, the nation had to pay an INDEMNITY; both factors explain the large sums of state expenses in the early years of the restored monarchy.
Despite a brief period of WHITE TERROR, the years between 1815 and 1830 were years of peace, in marked contrast to the previous decades. This permitted the French economy to recover and prosperity to return. The expedition of 1822 to Spain placed a financial burden on the French treasury.
