1861-1911 History of Italy since 1945

Principality of Monaco, 1911-1945

In 1911, Prince Albert I. granted a constitution to Monaco, ending absolute rule. His son and successor (as of 1922), Prince Louis II. served in the French army during World War I.
Monaco always adopted the French monetary system; in 1925 the French Franc was declared official tender (Monaco only occasionally issued coins and banknotes of her own). The population of Monaco rose from 19,000 in 1910 to 22,000 in 1945.
In 1922 football club AS Monaco was founded; since 1929 the Grand Prix of Monaco was held.
During World War II, Monaco pursued a policy of neutrality, sympathetic with Vichy France (which, on paper, also pursued a policy of neutrality). Monaco was occupied by Italian forces in 1943, soon followed by German forces; under German occupation, Monaco's Jews were subjected to the Holocaust policy. Monaco was liberated in the late summer of 1944.
