In Antiquity Greek and Etruscan settlements were established in coastal areas, while the interior was inhabited by Corsicans.
By the mid 3rd century B.C. Carthago exercised dominant political influence, but had to cede the islands of Corsica and Sardinia
to Rome in 237 B.C.; Rome made them the second province of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, successively Corsica came under the rule of the Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Pisans and Genoese. These conquerors exercised power over Corsica because of their navy. Control was stronger in ports and coastal areas, less strong in the interior. Throughout much of the 18th century, much of Corsica slipped out of Genoese control. In 1768 the Republic of Genoa sold Corsica to France. Corsican resistance continued; during the Napoleonic years Corsica briefly was an independent Anglo-Corsican Kingdom. Corsica was returned to France, divided in two departements, Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse. Historical Atlas, France Page |
