First posted on August 24th 2011

Territorial History
In the 10th century the territory of La Marche was disputed among the Counts of Poitou and Aquitaine and the Kings of France. In 955/958 the County of La Marche was established. It was held by a number of dynasties until confiscated by the French crown in 1525. While briefly handed out as an apanage to menbers of the royal family, since 1525 it was a French province.
In 1558 part of La Marche - the elections of Gueret and Bellegarde - were placed under the Generality of Moulins, part - the elections of Bourganeuf and Bellac placed under the Generality of Limoges.
In 1790 La Marche was dissolved, her territory split among the departements 23 Creuse, 36 Indre, 86 Vienne and 87 Haute-Vienne. In 1974 the Region Limousin was established, comprising of the departements Correze, Creuse and Haute-Vienne, or roughly of the old provinces of Limousin and La Marche.

La Marche bordered on Angoumois and Poitou in the West, on Berri in the North, on Auvergne in the East and on Limousin in the South.
