As such, it has been phrased by modern historians and does not appear in historical documents; it is not to be confused with the Holy Roman Empire, often simply referred to as the Empire, in which the influence of the Habsburg Emperors was rather limited. In 1806 the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved and Francis I. assumed the title "Emperor of Austria" which was applied to the entirety of his territorial possessions. Since the Compromise of 1867, the expression "Austria-Hungary" was used; the files listed below, from 1867 on, for domestic policy, the economy and intellectual life, refer to the Austrian half of Austria-Hungary, also referred to as Cisleithania.
