1969-1990

Austria, since 1990

Administration . The office of PM, from 1986 to 1997, was held by Franz Vranitzky (SPÖ), from 1997 to 2000 by Viktor Klima (SPÖ), from 2000 to 2007 by Wolfgang Schüssel (ÖVP), since 2007 by Alfred Gusenbauer (SPÖ). Parliamentary elections were held in 1990, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002 and 2006.

Foreign Policy . Austria joined the EU in 1995. Austria signed the Schengen Protocoll, abolishing her controls on the borders to Italy and Germany; in 2002/2004 Austria introduced the Euro currency.
The Presidency of Kurt Waldheim ended in 1992, and so did the 'diplomatic isolation'.
The War of Yugoslav Disintegration began in 1992 with the Yugoslav army and Slovenian separatists fighting a skirmish just across the border from Austria, in Slovenia.

Political History . As Austria's traditional two major parties, the (conservative) People's Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democrats (SPÖ) ruled in a Grand Coalition from 1996 to 2000, the small Freedom Party (FPÖ), moving to the extreme right, gained a significant share of the votes. Populist FPÖ politician Jörg Haider repeatedly made headlines by statements interpreted by some as xenophobic. In 2000 the FPÖ became junior partner in a coalition with the ÖVP; in the elections of 2002 it suffered a severe electorat defeat.
In 2006, British historian David Irving served several months in an Austrian jail for Holocaust denial.

The Economy . In 2002/2004 Austria introduced the Euro currency, which replaced the Austrian Schilling.

Social History . The census of 1991 counted 7.79 million Austrians, the census of 2001 8.03 million.

Cultural History . Austrian athletes participated in the Summer Olympics of Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, and in the Winter Olympics of Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994, Nagano 1998, Salt Lake City 2002 and Turin 2006. Austrian athletes took 6 gold in Albertville, 2 in Lillehammer, 3 in Nagano, 3 in Salt Lake City and 9 in Turin.
