The Princebishopric of Paderborn, 1650-1719

Bishop DIETRICH ADOLF VON DER RECKE (1650-1661) succeeded in reestablishing Paderborn's independence by severing ties to Cologne. His successor FERDINAND VON FÜRSTENBERG (1661-1682) was a patron of the arts and of science; since 1678 he also was bishop of MÜNSTER. FRANZ ARNOLD WOLF VON METTERNICH ZU GRACHT in 1706 had himself also elected bishop of MÜNSTER, a much larger and richer diocese.
