The Governorate of Trieste was established in 1813 by combining the County of Gorizia and Gradisca (in German : Görz und Gradisca), the Free City of Trieste and the Margraviate of Istria (including the stretches of Istria until 1797 belonging to the Republic of Venice). From 1816 to 1849 the Governorate Trieste (as the Austrian Littoral was referred to at that time) was part of the Kingdom of Illyria (which again was part of the Austrian Empire. In 1849 the Kingdom of Illyria was dissolved, so the Austrian Littoral until 1867 formed a separate crownland of the Austrian Empire, from 1867 to 1919 of Austria-Hungary. Following the defeat of Austria-Hungary in World War I, the Austrian Littoral was annexed by Italy.
