The Habsburg Dynasty acquired the County of Gorizia in 1500, and the County of Gradisca in 1747. In this year both were merged to form the County of Gorizia and Gradisca. The combined territory still was small, and often administrated by the same governor as adjacent Carniola and Triest. The Captaincy (sometimes called County) of Tolmin, the Captaincy of Flitsch (modern Bovec) and the Territories of Idrijca and Aquileja, by many sources, are treated as an annex to Gorizia and Gradisca; the combined area being referred to as Österreichisch Friaul / Friuli Orientale (Austrian or Eastern Friuli). The County of Gorizia and Gradisca, with Tolmin and Idrijca, together with Carniola, Styria and Carinthia, was regarded part of the larger administrative region of Inner Austria. In 1752 Gorizia became the see of an archdiocesis. In 1802 Gorizia-Gradisca with Tolmin was annexed into the Austrian province of Venice (i.e. the Venetian territory annexed by Austria in 1797). In 1805 Austria ceded, among others, Gorizia and Gradisca to France, which integrated it into the Illyrian Provinces. In 1815 the area was reannexed by Austria, and formed part of the Kingdom of Illyria 1815-1848, and afterward of the Austrian Littoral. In 1919 Austria ceded the area to Italy. In 1945/1947 part of the area came under trhe rule of Yugoslavia (Slovenia).
