The Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt was created by the partition of the Landgraviate of Hessen in 1567. Lutheranism was
state confession. The Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt was member of the Upper Rhenish Imperial Circle within the
Holy Roman Empire. In the early 17th
century, Hessen-Darmstadt and Hessen-Kassel competed for the inheritance of Hessen-Marburg
(a line which had become extinct in 1604). The territories of the latter were partitioned. In consequence of the Secularization 1803 and of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1806, Hessen-Darmstadt saw a significant acquisition of territory. In 1806 the Landgraviate was elevated to Grand Duchy. The Vienna Congress of 1815 defined the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt as consisting of three parts, Oberhessen located to the north of the Main, Rheinhessen located to the left of the Rhine, and Amt Starkenburg east of the Rhine and south of the Main, where capital Darmstadt was located. From 1815 to 1871, Hessen-Darmstadt was member of the German Federation, from 1828 to 1871 of the Zollverein. In the Seven Weeks War 1866 Hessen-Darmstadt fought on the Austrian side, and had to cede the Hessisches Hinterland to Prussia, in the Franco-German War 1870-1871 as an ally of Prussia, Bavaria etc. In 1871 Hessen-Darmstadt, while retaining political autonomy, became part of the newly established German Empire.
