The County of Montbeliard, within the Holy Roman Empire, first appears in the 11th century.
In 1397 it entered into a dynastic union with the Duchy of Württemberg.
Prior to the Reformation it formed part of the Diocese of Besançon. In the Imperial Diet (Reichstag), Montbeliard held
position 43 on the secular bench in the Council of Princes (Knorr 1672). In 1524 the Protestant Reformation was introduced; Montbeliard became Lutheran in 1541. The area is French-speaking. From 1553-1593 it waws ruled by the Dukes of Württemberg-Urach, from 1617 to 1723 by the Dukes of Württemberg-Mömpelgard, from 1593 to 1617 and from 1723 to 1802 again in dynastic union with the Duchy of Württemberg. Repeatedly the county suffered French occupation; in 1802 it was ceded to France and annexed into the Departement Doubs (Franche Comte). In the 18th century, the following territories were listed as dependent on the Principality of Montbeliard : in the Holy Roman Empire the old County of Montbeliard, the old County and castle of Sponeck, the Barony of Franquemont, in the Kingdom of France the Baronies of Horbourg, Reichenweiher, within the Franche Comte : Blamont, Clemont, Hericourt, Chatelot, Granges, Clerval, Passevant (Hübner 1761). Spelling varieties : Montbeliard, Montbelliard, Montbeillard, Monbelliard, Mumpelgard, Mümpelgard, Mömpelgard, Mümpelgart, Mons Bellicardus, monsbellicardensis, Mons Pelligardus Today the territory of the county of Montbeliard is regarded part of the region of Franche Comte; historical publications often treat it as part of the region of Alsace. |
