The Land Rheinland-Pfalz was formed in 1946 by merging parts of the Prussian Provinces of
Nassau (1944-1946) with parts of the Rheinprovinz (Rhine Province),
with most of the Pfalz (Palatinate, hitherto part of Bavaria) and
with the Rheinhessen area of Hessen (Hessen-Darmstadt) (all part of the
German Empire 1871-1945. Mainz was chosen as the capital. From 1945 to 1949 Rheinland-Pfalz belonged to the French Zone of Occupation in Germany; from 1949 onward it formed one of the 10 (since 1990 16) states of the Federal Republic of Germany. As Rheinland=Pfalz, as a political entity, is very young, the amount of historical source material pertaining to it as this particular political entity is rather limited. On the other hand, a number of historical institutions receive public funding from the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, funding which is often tied to the condition that research and publications thus financed must pertain to what is Rheinland-Pfalz today. The results of such works, reaching beyond the year 1946 further back into history, are listed below. The user of this page should be aware that publications dealing with the history of what is Rheinland-Pfalz today, but do not use the term "Rheinland-Pfalz" / "Rhineland-Palatinate" in the title, in many cases will not be listed below. For students of the history of the region prior to 1946 it is advised to consult the WHKMLA pages on the states / entities of whose territories Rheinland-Pfalz was composed in 1946. |
